I decided to change my system of titles.

Since the D65 studies start to have several pieces for each number (n°5.1, 5.2… 6.1, 6.2…) there will be a series number, refering to the type of research (or the ‘family’,) and a serial number starting with a sharp ‘#’

series 5 #2:

– I avoided most pencil traces

– Done in one week (absolute speed record, thanks to computer programming)

– Two new pigments: DPP Red (PR 254), and a Gofun-based Japanese Magenta from here: gofun

Maybe my most beautiful piece so far (?)

a good junction

To have a good (near invisible) junction between two triangular zones means succeeding, with different lines boldness and angles, to cover the paper with the same proportions of colors. If it is visually good, it means that the drawing instrument is well calibrated, and that all the calculus were correct.

In my next drawing D65 n°6 I will have a lot of junctions like this one, the challenge will be to make them all as good as this one! :)

Oooooooooooohhh…….. 幸せ!!!!!

I spent the last few days, entire days, learning how to use the C++ programming language, first attending one hour particular lesson at home, then via internet (in particular by posting my problems on the great website stackoverflow.com) and finally today I succeeded creating a first version of what I wanted: a simple error-diffusion bitmap algorithm that I will now improve and reuse in my wallpaper project (or “Light Transformer v.3”, see v.2 here: Light Transformer 2)

That’s great, I’m happy – and tired – now :)

The two largest rectangles have the same color average: same colors in the same proportions.

The one on the top is made of 4 layers, one color per layer, one spatial frequency per color, and the angles between the layers are “optimized” in order to get rid of moiré effects.

On the other one there’s also 4 layers, but with a unique frequency, a 45° rotation and the colors are randomly diffused.

Both are trying to “match” the average color of the background and in both paint is covering 60% of the paper.

The 1st one is almost invisible, the second appears to contain intense colors.

D65 n°3 part II starts

I’m gonna do a “lamp simulation” (a circular gradient with constant tint and varying brightness, based on the abstract model of a “perfect lamp,”) based on 11 colors: 3 times RGB with 3 levels of brightness (I dont enter into the detail of how I choosed them) and Black/White.

For me, there’s not much difference between such a work (the prototype, made of laserprints on paper) and a “traditionnal painting.”

I’m really starting to think it’s just the same thing, like Richter includes amateur photography in the field of “painting.”

Light Transformer Prototype v.2

The prototype is finally finished!

So, to explain in a few words: 1-the amount of light projected by high-power spots on the wall has been measured. 2-an algorithm has been created to absorb the light using black over white laser-prints until the wall’s surface emits the same amount of light to the eyes of an observer situated in front of it. 3-The central part of this print has been cut and the same process remade a second time within the limits of this cut.

The impression produced is impossible to reproduce in photography, so the pictures there are just “documentation.” The impression is a bit like if the light was actually coming from “behind” the wall, like if the rectangle was a “window,” opening the wall, like in a dark corridor…

I’m really happy with it, I think it would be great to remake this much bigger the next time (and after developping the tools for it, I could make it much faster and more precisely…) I’m thinking of a “virtual corridor.” I’ve always been attracted by the idea of “remaking” the corridors of italian museums, where you walk slowly and stop at every painting on your sides. I could now make the painting of a corridor of paintings… :)

Something is slightly wrong – the values are increasing where the light is intense -, but it’s still very close to what I wanted (an equalized luminance everywhere in the rectangle).

good & bad news :)

The bad news: the laser printer cannot handle large black prints, some unit of the printer makes a random glossy layer on it.

the (very) good news id that the luminance correction is not very angle-dependant, means that except for that random gloss, the correction works at a wide variety of viewpoints, that’s really nice.

from the left side, the gloss dissappears and the flat is still “flat.”

I will try to create a “ganzfeld” on this wall by subtracting light (using black printed patterns.)

This is the object of my residency at Netwerk, Aalst, BE, from last Monday to next Saturday.
